ประเพณีทำบุญสารทเดือนสิบ มีเป้าหมายหลักอยู่ที่การอุทิศส่วนบุญส่วนกุศลไปให้ พ่อแม่ ปู่ย่า ตายาย ตลอดจนญาติพี่น้องที่ล่วงลับไปแล้ว แต่ด้วยช่วงเวลาปฏิบัติและวิถี ปฏิบัติของผู้ซึ่งเป็นพุทธศาสนิกชน จึงทำให้ประเพณีนี้มีความมุ่งหมายอื่น ๆ เข้าประกอบด้วย ดังต่อไปนี้

1. เพื่อเป็นการทำบุญอุทิศส่วนกุศลไปให้พ่อแม่ ปู่ย่า ตายาย ญาติ พี่น้อง หรือบุคคลอื่น ที่ล่วงลับไปแล้ว

2. เป็นการทำบุญ แสดงความชื่นชมยินดี ในโอกาสที่ได้รับผลิตผลทางการเกษตร ในช่วงปลาย เดือน 10 ซึ่งตรงกับประเพณีสารท เป็นระยะที่พืชพันธุ์ต่าง ๆ กำลังให้ผลชาวบ้านจะนำพืชผล ทั้งในลักษณะที่ไม่แปรสภาพและแปรสภาพเป็นอาหารต่าง ๆ แล้วไปถวายพระสงฆ์ เพื่อความ เป็นสิริมงคลแก่ตนเองและครอบครัว

3. เพื่อเป็นการอำนวยประโยชน์ ในด้านปัจจัยอาหารแด่ภิกษุสงฆ์ ในช่วงฤดูฝนโดยนำพืชผลไม้ และอาหารแห้งไปถวายพระสงฆ์เพื่อเก็บไว้เป็นเสบียงในฤดูฝน ซึ่งจะเริ่มในตอนปลายเดือน 10 การจัดเสบียงอาหารนี้ จะจัดเป็นสำรับที่ชาวใต้เรียกว่า "หมรับ" แล้วถวายโดยวิธีให้พระภิกษุ จัดสลากเรียกว่า "สลากภัต" พระภิกษุจะให้ศิษย์เก็บหมรับรับไว้ เพื่อนำมาประเคนถวายเป็นมื้อๆ

4. เพื่อเป็นการแสดงความสนุกสนานรื่นเริงประจำปีร่วมกัน เพราะญาติมิตรที่อยู่ใกล้ไกลจะกลับ สู่ภูมิลำเนาค่อนข้างพร้อมหน้าพร้อมตากัน จึงมักมีการจัดงานรื่นเริงเฉลิมฉลองกันในลักษณะ ต่างๆ จังหวัดนครศรีธรรมราชมีการจัดงานรื่นเริงควบคู่กับประเพณีทำบุญเดือน 10 เป็นงาน ใหญ่โต เรียกว่า "งานเดือนสิบ" ซึ่งยังคงจัดมาจนถึงปัจจุบัน
