Check your transmission fluid level, if its low, or overfilled that would most likely be your problem. An overfilled transmission will cause the fluid to foam and as a result will cause the transmission to malfunction. The fluid in the transmission actually serves as both a lubricant and a hydraulic fluid, so if it foams up, it looses both of those abilities and thus the transmission will 1. overheat, and 2. not function correctly until it cools back down. If the transmission isn't filled completely there again the transmission will 1. overheat much quicker, 2. not function correctly, 3. there won't be enough fluid to properly operate the hydraulically operated components of the transmission i.e. shift solenoids. Also, if the transmission fluid level is low, it causes a loss of fluid to the torque converter which in an automatic transmission takes the place of a clutch and transfers power from the engine to the transmission in the form of hydraulics by the fluid splashing on the fins of the torque converter causing the transmission to rotate all the internal parts.
Also, if your jeep does have a transmission cooler if its clogged with leaves, dirt, etc, wash it off with a very small stream of water at low pressure, you don't want to bend or damage the fins on the tranny cooler.
