The hospital in Christchurch is still operational, however Auckland Hospital is now on Code Red to receive patients. Several rest homes are also being considered for evacuation.
At least 80 percent of the central city is without power and temporary accommodation is being organised for those who are displaced. Civil Defence is looking to erect tents in Hagley Park, where there are no buildings around to pose immediate danger.
Civil Defence advises people in the area should:
Expect aftershocks
If you do experience an aftershock; drop, cover and hold on
Assess your home or workplace for damage. If the building appears unsafe, get everyone out
Use stairs, not elevators
When outside, watch for fallen power lines or broken gas lines
Look for and extinguish small fires, if it is safe to do so
Do not overload phones with non-emergency calls
Help those who require special assistance such as infants, the elderly and people with disabilities
Search and Rescue
Police are urging residents not to jump in and help with the search or dig through the rubble themselves.
Urban Search and Rescue task forces from Palmerston North and Auckland have been deployed to support the Christchurch USAR taskforce, which is operating at near full strength. Two USAR teams from Australia are also being mobilised, and support from the US is on standby.
Missing Persons
Twitter users trying to locate friends and family are asked to use the #eqnzcontact hashtag.
The Twitter account @safeinchch has also been set up for first hand news of those who are located safe and well.
Google has also set up a people finder for those missing in Christchurch

Infrastructure
There have been widespread reports of building collapse and damage across the CBD and in Lyttleton - view photos - including the Christchurch Cathedral which was nearly demolished in the quake. A thorough damage assessment will be completed by Civil Defence over the next 24 hours. Rescue work is expected to take "days" to complete.
As aftershocks continue, further damage is likely.
